Part 6: Identifying Grammar Errors

Grammar: Adjectives and Adverbs

The jobs of an adjective and an adverb are really very similar. An adjective is a word that modifies a noun, or pronoun, while an adverb similarly modifies a verb, or an adjective or adverb.

Some examples are:

Adjective

Adverb

a, an, the

.

just

just

beautiful

beautifully

.

always

It should be noted that some words are adjectives only, some adverbs only, and while some are both, some of those have the same form and some change form.

Perhaps one of the biggest mistakes is using an adjective in place of an adverb and vice versa.

He was hard working. He was hardly working. (meaning = not working hard!) He was working hard.
Please drive careful. Please drive carefully.
She is a safety driver. She is a safe driver.
