What is TOEIC®, Part 1

In part 1, you see a picture in the test booklet. There is no written material. You hear four sentences on the test tape. You must then choose the best sentence given the material in the picture. This section of the test looks for several things; your ability to analyze the picture, your understanding of what you see and hear, and your listening discrimination.

A typical question has a black and white picture. Then, there are four spoken sentences for you to choose from.

A sample question might look like this:

a) The water is over the bridge

b) The streamer is on the ground

c) The Reds are bridging the water

d) The structure looks pretty old

Of course, the answer is d)


Some things to pay particular attention to include:

listening discriminiation
prepositions
THINK! Look for main ideas and think! What could have happened or will happen?
vocabulary
among others
