Advise vs. suggest to

Please remember that these two terms mean almost the same:

  • Advise
  • Suggest (to)

But, in actual conversation we say:
  • He advised me to go to the lecture on speech compression.
    -or-
  • He suggested to me that I go to the lecture on speech compression.
    -but-
  • I suggest you accompany me to that same lecture.

Other synonyms for advise include:

Inform

Notify

-or- She recommended to me that I see the movie Armageddon.

Report

-or- It reported to me that the disk had been formatted.
-but- She reported him to the police (for stealing her purse).
