I have heard this one from many students.

We win a game or win a prize but we beat a team or country. Win implies we GET the named item, either a title or a prize. Beat implies a superior performance against an opponent.

Study the following examples:


WRONG

Germany won France.

France is now the property of Germany?

OK

Germany beat France.

This is OK.


Or try these Idiomatic Expressions

Cool!

Tech High School whipped Prep!

Beat them by a good margin.

Cool!

Our team slaughtered them.

Beat them by a huge margin.

Cool!

We hit them where it hurts.

Another good one.

Cool!

Korea triumphed over Italy.

Another good one.

Cool!

Our company team killed them.

Another good one.

Cool!

Apple(r) defeated IBM(r) in the big baseball playoff.

Another good one.

Cool!

Wisconsin vanquished Idaho.

Another good one.

Cool!

St. John's conquerored City High.

America licked Nigeria in Winter sports.

Please note that many of the commonly used idiomatic expressions today are quite violent in nature... I guess that is the nature of the human race.
