Like a US style election, you have two choices... The following sentences are either right or wrong. If they are wrong, please say what is wrong and why. Most of these sentences are based on things I've heard in my classes... so good material to study (actually this is a 'request' ;-[))) But remember... some of the sentences are CORRECT! Oh! And some sentences may have two or more things wrong! Get ready! Get set! Go! and good Luck!This version is low tech (for those who prefer not to use JavaScript!). 1) What, if anything, is wrong with this sentence?
Please finish these sentences until you leave at the end of the day today.

Answer:This sentence seems a little strange to a native speakerUntil is the key here.Consider the alternative sentences shown below:Please finish these sentences by the time you leave 'at the end of the day' OR 'today'.Please work on these sentences until you leave 'at the end of the day' OR 'today'.

Please turn off your computer when you leave at the end of the day.

Answer:This sentence is OK, just as it is.

3) What, if anything, is wrong with this sentence?
In my free time, I like to reading many books.

Answer:This one is a common problem for many students -I can say 'I like to read many books.'or 'I like reading many books.' but to be honest,I would probably just say 'I like reading.'

4) What, if anything, is wrong with this sentence?
Jack Welch announced that he would not be retiring as planned, but would stay on anyway.

Answer: This sentence is OK, just as it ishowever some might say that you do not need the last word, 'anyway'.

5) What, if anything, is wrong with this sentence?
Japan won America in the tennis tournament.

Answer:We win a prize, but we beat an opponent.To say Japan WON America means America is now Japan's property.

6) What, if anything, is wrong with this sentence?
I am not in the office from 11/2 due to the business trip.

Answer:In the last few words we have the definite article the.This would imply you take only ONE business trip.It would be better to say 'due to a business trip.'

Please keep the president informed the progress of the Internet project.

Answer:Here we are missing a preposition.'informed x the progress' should have something connecting the words,such as informed about... or informed regarding...

8) What, if anything, is wrong with this sentence?
All the teachers advise to me to study more diligently.

Answer:We do not need the preposition 'to' before me in this sentence.'All the teachers advise me to study more diligently.'would be much better

9) What, if anything, is wrong with this sentence?
At the end of the interview, the interviewee collapsed in a heap.

Answer:There is nothing wrong with this sentence, it is fine as it is.

10) What, if anything, is wrong with this sentence?
Living in Japan for over ten years, I have surely ever eaten sushi and sashimi.

Answer:First, surely ever is a bit redundant. Second, while we use 'I have never eaten sushi',we do not say 'I have ever eaten suchi.'

11) What, if anything, is wrong with this sentence?
If you need to reach me ASAP, please ask one of my staff for phone No. you can reach to me.

Answer:There are several things wrong here. First, we should say 'for THE phone number'. Second, we should say 'WHERE you can reach me (not TO me).'

If you cooperate each other you will have a better chance of succeeding in the project.

Answer:'If you cooperate WITH each other'After cooperate we need the preposition with.

Triskaidekaphobia is the fear of the number 13.

Answer:Nothing... and that is an interesting but of trivia, don't you think? ;-[)))

14) What, if anything, is wrong with this sentence?
Some students say they can not come to class because they have a limitation of time.

Answer:Grammtically this sentence may be OK, however from a native speaker point of view it sounds very strange. We may say because they have no time, or limited time, but 'have a limitation of time' is strange.

15) What, if anything, is wrong with this sentence?
With Gore and Bush running neck 'n neck, it is hard to predict which will cross the finish line.

Answer:Nothing, this sentence may be idiomatic but proper. Note the ''n' stand for and - neck and neck.
